Why you would think the PC is dead
In the computing world, mobility is now king. The latest phenomenon to have swept the industry off its feet is the tablet PC, which shows little sign of slowing down. Then you have the up and coming class of Ultrabooks spurred on by funding from chip giant Intel which aims to combine performance, portability and battery life into one well priced package. There is also the surge of the smartphone market with Android and iOS firmly at the helm. All indications are that the desktop PC’s time has come and gone.
Tablet PCs, the future of two handed mobile computing
Tablet devices are the future; there is no question about it. While they remain an infant compared to the well established PC and laptop, sales are through the roof and every manufacturer is rushing to get a tablet device out to the market.
The devices have their shortcomings, as does every technology in its first and second generation, but companies are starting to address these. Tablet PCs now ship with optional docking stations with features such as keyboards, increased battery life, and more connection options – just take a look at the Asus EEE Pad Transformer or the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet.
Smartphones – the future of hand held mobile computing
Smartphones are also the future; there is very little doubt about that. While they have been around since the late 90s, Smartphone’s are now more accessible to the general public. They are cheaper than before, sport infinitely more features, and are well supported. They are also versatile thanks to their various operating systems. With Android and iOS both providing a marketplace where developers can host and sell their own unique applications, there is very little a smartphone can’t do nowadays.
The smartphone handles communication perfectly. We have access to phone calls, SMS, e-mail, video conferencing, instant messaging, social media and the internet – a smart mobile phone excels as a communication device, and this is only one of its many features.
Ultrabooks, the future of laptop mobile computing
Ultrabooks are yet again the future; there isn’t much more than mild doubt about it. Laptops have been around for well over two decades, and the ultra powerful desktop replacement notebook has been around for an almost equal amount of time. However, what makes the Ultrabook so appealing is that it aims to provide high power components in a small, lightweight and portable package with impressive battery life.
As I look around the MyBroadband office, all of us make use of a laptop as our primary work device. We work on them all day; we take them to press events; we get home and work on them; and sometimes even game on them. An Ultrabook that could do all of this as well as offer greater portability with a longer battery life will almost certainly find its way onto our shopping lists.
With all of these modern technologies available right now, who could argue that the PC is on its way out?
