IMFT, a joint venture between Intel and Micron has announced its capability to produce a 128GB die based on the new 20nm manufacturing process.

These 128GB dies could allow consumer level 2.5 inch SSD drives to reach capacities of up to 2TB by 2013. The company announced that mass production of the new die will kick off in the first half of next year, with drives making use of the technology appearing on shelves in 2013.

IMFT also announced that it had begun mass production of a 64GB 20nm die, with consumer drives making use of this technology expected to appear mid way through next year.

The 128GB parts are not just scaled up versions of the 64GB parts, they increase the page size up to 16,384 bytes where previous parts were limited to 8,192 bytes, and are capable of 333 megatransfers per second (MT/s) per controller channel, a substantial increase over the previous maximum of 200 MT/s.
