Post Office warns against 'car' scam

"This message, which originates from a telephone number in Kenya, also requests the receiver to purchase postal orders of various amounts and post them to an address in Kenya," the SA Post Office said in a statement.

Three consecutive messages are left on the phone, starting with the announcement that the person had won a car, followed by a request for R2000 to be paid into a Kenyan bank account.

"The third message would read: ‘After sending the money we shall send you the flight number, the date and time of departure and arrival in Oliver Tambo Int. Airport. Thank you’. "

Anyone with information on the scam can contact the Post Office’s crimebuster hotline on 0800-020-070.
