Communications DG quits
Director General Lyndall Shope-Mafole, recently resigned from the ANC and joined COPE, has now resigned from her government post. In a statement issued on Thursday evening Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri said that she had agreed with Shope-Mafole to shorten her contract.
This news comes only hours after the Ministerial Media Liaison Officer Joe Makhafola slated an ITWeb article which suggested that political infighting, coupled with the department’s disappointing overall performance, has resulted in speculation that Shope-Mafole could be on her way out.
Despite previous statements by Shope-Mafole that she intended to serve out her contract, media speculation was rife that her term would be cut short because of her new political affiliation.
Shope-Mafole was widely seen as a driver behind the Department of Communications managed liberalization policies and was a strong supporter of Government’s maintained shareholding in Telkom.
