MTN offers virtual prepaid top-up product
M-Charge is a virtual prepaid top up product which allows for the sale of airtime to prepaid subscribers without using cards, vouchers or pin numbers.
Says Donovan Smith, GM Consumer Segment: “There is the very real possibility that as a result of the M-Charge product, we could create 9 000 jobs for every 500 000 prepaid subscribers. Just imagine with over 6 million prepaid subscribers, we could create up to 108 000 new jobs.”
The product is mobile which opens up the market to people who do not necessarily have premises.
According to MTN ‘getting set up in the business is really as easy as 1-2-3, and the investment required – a minimum of R300.00 is affordable. All you need is your MTN cell phone, a 32k or upwards SIM card, as well as R300.’
MTN will support start-up vendors by providing an MTN M-Charge Vendor pack from the nearest distributor which will contain a bib, hat (sportie) and other point of sale.
A big selling point for M-Charge according to the provider is that this service provides customers with added convenience and they will be able to get airtime from vendors for R10-00 and up.
Allowing entrepreneurs to sell directly to their community whilst making a living is well suited to the SA market, especially for people in rural and remote areas who often don’t have easy access to the conventional distribution chain.
