Four arrested for copper theft
Two men and two women were arrested at a scrap yard in Cullinan for possession of stolen copper cables, Gauteng police said on Friday.
Spokeswoman Captain Pinky Tsinyane said the four, aged between 25 and 55, were arrested on Thursday during a police operation.
“It is alleged that the copper is being bought or stolen from other people. The estimated value of copper seized is R54,000,” she said.
“Investigations continue and more arrests are expected. The women face additional charges of defeating the ends of justice after they allegedly warned the truck driver transporting the copper that police were at the scrap yard.”
The driver was on his way to the scrap yard on Thursday with another load of copper when he was alerted.
The four are expected to appear in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court soon.
