DStv makes channel changes
MultiChoice and M-Net have replaced the Africa Magic Family channel on DStv after 12 years, renaming it Africa Magic+ and moving it to a cheaper package.
Veteran broadcast journalist Thinus Ferreira reported that the Africa Magic Family channel was removed from DStv on 5 November 2026 and replaced with Africa Magic+.
The channel, packaged by M-Net, aired family-focused Nollywood dramas and series aimed predominantly at a Nigerian pay-TV audience.
As with DStv’s replacement of Mzansi Wethu with Wethu+, it has taken a similar approach in replacing Africa Magic Family.
Similarly to Wethu+, Africa Magic+ has also been moved to the new DStv Starter package, available for R99 per month.
Ferreira said Canal+, MultiChoice, and M-Net have strategically moved Africa Magic+ to lower-priced tiers to expand its audience reach.
DStv launched the new Wethu+ channel alongside its package overhaul in mid-September 2026. The channel is dedicated to local entertainment, movies, family viewing, and live football.
“Designed for the whole family, the channel brings together popular telenovelas, drama series, local movies, children’s programming, educational content, and live PSL action,” it said.
Wethu+ replaced Mzansi Wethu on DStv Channel 163. MultiChoice said it combines Mzansi Wethu, Mzansi Bioskop, and Mzansi Magic Music into a single channel.
“The channel also introduces international blockbuster movies as well as local telenovelas, dubbed telenovelas, and local reality shows,” it said.
MultiChoice said football forms an important part of the Wethu+ viewing experience, and during the football season, viewers can watch two live PSL matches every weekend.
“The addition of live football alongside drama, movies and family entertainment gives Wethu+ a unique appeal, offering viewers access to both sport and entertainment on a single channel,” it said.
Regarding prime-time programming, Wethu+ features a line-up of local favourites, including Umhlaba Wezifiso S1 and Shaka iLembe S2.
It will also carry new episodes of Homecoming S2, My Brother’s Keeper S2, and The River S6, as well as offering learning and family programming.
“The channel includes dedicated educational and family-focused programming that supports learning while keeping younger viewers engaged,” MultiChoice said.
“Children’s and educational content form part of the daytime schedule, while Woza Matrics provides Matric learners with valuable revision and exam-preparation support.”
