Telkom planning new eMGW wireless service
Telkom is actively expanding its product offerings and staring to use more wireless technologies such as WiMax and HSDPA to serve its customer base. While Telkom is using WiMax only as an ADSL supplement, its 7.2Mbps HSDPA service is competing directly with Vodacom and MTN’s mobile broadband services.
To serve the rural and peri-rural market segment, Telkom is planning to launch services using "enhanced MultiGain Wireless System" (eMGW) – a hybrid IP data and voice fixed wireless access system. Telkom is aiming this service at consumers who are currently reliant on satellite services for their Internet and telecommunications needs. The new eMGW service will provide much more affordable and stable services to consumers in rural areas.
According to wireless broadband systems provider Alvarion, eMGW is the optimal price versus performance fixed wireless access system for operators who need to provide coverage to subscribers in green fields, provide voice and Internet services in low and medium subscriber density areas and provide voice services in sparse rural areas. eMGW has the advantage of low initial investment costs or reduced capital requirements and further allows for a cost effective, rapidly deployment of a network and services.
Apart from standard voice services, eMGW enables high-speed Internet access with peak data rates of 512Kbps in full duplex or 1024Kbps in an asymmetric operation. Telkom is initially planning a voice and Internet service with download speeds of up to 512Kbps.
Telkom has already conducted successful trials using eMGW and suitable systems to support the eMGW based services are currently being developed. A launch date for the new wireless service has not been made public yet.
