Movies on Demand over ADSL
Well known Internet Service Provider (ISP) Axxess has launched their DSL’s Digital Delivery of Media, offering subscribers a service to download and watch movies or programs on their PC or Mac. The service makes use of OttoVod movie playback which is powered by DivX.
Movie rentals range between R10 and R35 while purchasing a movie cost between R75 and R150 per title. The typical size of a movie or program is between 300MB and 1GB. At this stage the bandwidth for downloads will be charged which significantly increases the price, but Axxess said that they are working on a “better price for the local only accounts” and that this will be available soon.
There are various content categories to choose from, including new releases, music, sport, health and adult. The price of individual movies is not yet available on OttoVod, something which Axxess said will be addressed in future.
Other service providers which are currently using the OttoVod service include GTS –who typically provide subscribers within the gated communities which they serve with VoD services – and Black Earth Communications.
