Movies on Demand over ADSL from Axxess

interresting.
ISPs are starting to offer more and more different services, like the WA gaming thing the other day; and with the prices dropping on band things are really looking better.
 
Movie Quality ? Legal Issues with owning a movie ?
Minimum Speed Requirements ?

Come on guys ... a little more research please ?
 
I love this idea although it is still a bit on the pricey side. Hopefully they will drop prices in due time for this service because @ R50 min +- a movie rental incl download I'm only going to watch like 1 or 2 a month if I really am too lazy to just drive to a video store.

Oh and hopefully they will make a way to have this sort of thing run on a PS3 or XBox.
 
Movie rentals range between R10 and R35 while purchasing a movie cost between R75 and R150 per title. The typical size of a movie or program is between 300MB and 1GB. At this stage the bandwidth for downloads will be charged which significantly increases the price, but Axxess said that they are working on a “better price for the local only accounts” and that this will be available soon.

Sorry, that's too much. This venture is going to FAIL unless you can become competitive. Why charge the same price as a physical DVD? I'd rather have the physical DVD thanks.

Got 2 queries though.

Are they basically taking a DVD movie and making a DivX out of it and distributing it - how legal is this?

Once you have paid for and downloaded the DivX what's stopping you from giving it you all your friends? (Not that you can't do this if you actually buy the DVD)

Glad they are trying to innovate, but the pricing is just way to high.
 
How will you rent the movie? If it involves downloading it who is to say you will delete it after?

The DivX's are DRM'd
 
It surely has some dort of drm to it.
Will only work on the pc u download it to, can only be copied once, that sorta thing...
 
way to expensive i think. If the bandwidth was free for this service then maybe but na no thanks. would rather pay for a real dvd:)

+1 on innovation though.

The DivX files have a time stamp in them and self-destruct when the rental period expires.... 5 days I think.

I'm sure it will.

I can only hope that they don't try and make thier own. The concept is good but the pricing seems high. Also I can see this being controlled by the local film distributers so the content will all be old. All this will do is save you a drive to the video store.


Axxess... take a look at what iPlayer have done. I want something like this. All you have to do is become the local agent and host it locally.
 
The DRM is controlled from the server side and only allows that file to be played so many times. It can only be played through the DivX software.
 
the idea is good, BUT. its gonna make them get stricter on torrents and p2p whether they admit it or not .

previously the only risk to an ISP for you downloading torrents is the odd stupid letter from BayTSP. Now, your p2p is directly impacting their bottom-line cause u could be getting movies from them instead. I see shaping becoming worse, and possible "un-confirmed" dropping of p2p packets etc. etc.
