Faulty modems cause ADSL delays

In May MyBroadband reported that a shortage of ADSL modems were leaving many Telkom clients without a broadband connection.  At the time Telkom confirmed the shortage of ADSL modems in certain areas, and said that this was largely because of problems with their overseas supply chain.

Telkom said that they did receive delivery of some of the new stock required in mid-May and are expecting further deliveries around the 25th of May. Many ADSL subscribers are however still complaining that they are left stranded without a functional ADSL connection because of a shortage of ADSL modems from Telkom.

Telkom explained that poor quality modems are to blame for the current shortage.  “Telkom’s effort to fast-track distribution of newly arrived modems to customers who were on our waiting list, was hampered when large numbers of new modems, that arrived late May and in June 2009, did not pass our pre-distribution testing. As a result, these items could not be delivered to our customers,” said Ajith Bridgraj, Telkom’s Senior Specialist for Media Relations.

“Telkom received a further order of modems in the first week of July and anticipates further deliveries from suppliers from mid-July onwards. The new stock that has been received is currently under-going testing before distribution to our TelkomDirect outlets for delivery to customers.”

Bridgraj says that in the interim they are trying to manage the situation by moving stock between the TelkomDirect outlets, making home deliveries where possible and providing customers with refurbished modems on loan until additional new stock is received.

“Telkom apologises for the inconvenience caused to affected customers and is doing everything possible to resolve the matter as expeditiously as possible,” Bridgraj concluded.
