Neotel vs Neotel, Round Two

Reports have surfaced that Neotel has been unable to maintain a consistent connection for its internet users recently.  According to several MyBroadband users the problem, which saw either complete disconnection or a failure to provide access to international bandwidth, started on Sunday the 8th of November and persists.

Neotel subscribers added that the network felt sluggish and provided for inconsistent download speeds when connected. Some users have reported not being able to connect at all whist others say they have intermittent connectivity with one such customer recording very low speeds, “sometimes, I get bursts of speed, maybe up to an hour, but most of the time, its sub 10 kbps”.

A national problem

MyBroadband called Neotel’s technical help desk for clarification and the recorded message acknowledged that the provider is “currently experiencing technical issues with internet connections” adding that technicians are currently working on the problem.

The Neotel helpdesk assistant confirmed that there was a problem, adding that the lack of connectivity was a national problem primarily attributed to interference at Neotel’s base stations. When asked what might have caused the disturbance the operator said that it could be attributed to geographical factors, with bad weather fingered as a possible cause.

Neotel:  No national problem exists

The feedback from a company spokesperson was that “Neotel does not have a national problem regarding connectivity”.  The Neotel spokesperson explained that “access to defined international internet websites was intermittently affected between 04h00 and 10h00 on Monday, 9th November.”

According to Neotel the issue was resolved by 10h00 on Monday the 9th of November, adding that because the “problem [was] related to Internet routing; some destinations were unreachable at the time. However, at no time was any connectivity lost on Neotel’s national or international transit or peering routes.”

Despite this official response MyBroadband users continue to complain about connectivity issues.
