Telkom’s WiMax receives positive feedback
Telkom has been trialing their WiMax service since the end of March, and according to Lulu Letlape, Group Executive for Corporate Communication at Telkom, the feedback has been positive.
“Customers have responded positively especially with regards to the reliability and speed of the WiMax product,” said Letlape. She further pointed out that ISPs have also commended the speed and reliability of their WiMax service.
Telkom currently has WiMax coverage in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, but previously said that they are expanding their coverage to bring broadband access to a larger number of their customers.
WiMax is currently used as an ADSL replacement technology, and at this stage is only offered as an alternative option to customers if they reside within the WiMax footprint and cannot access ADSL.
According to Telkom, the number of active customers has increased since the initial installations that were facilitated for the purposes of trialing the WiMax product. Unfortunately Telkom could not divulge actual figures.
Various telecoms players, including Vodacom, Neotel and MWEB are also investing in their own WiMax networks with the aim of offering broadband services to consumers.
