Post Office strike unprotected

“The interdict also prohibits the striking workers from coming to within 500m of Post Offices and Mail Centres,” spokeswoman Kedibone Molopyane said.

“What this interdict also does is to allow the South African Post Office to get its operations back to normal and immediately implement contingency plans where they are needed.”

Further details would be made available later, she said.

Earlier, the Communication Workers’ Union said the Post Office had asked the court to declare the strike illegal, and to prohibit violence and obstruction.

The wage strike appeared to be over last Friday after the union issued a statement saying employees would return to work on Sunday.

But they had since said although they had reached consensus with the Post Office on the deal, they still did not have consensus from all their members.

Many employees had returned to work, but not all, particularly in Gauteng and the Post Office said it had to close some centres to protect them from alleged attempts at damage.
