Fastest SMS sender competition
The Guinness Book of World Records lists 42.22 seconds as the fastest a 160 character text message has ever been typed. LG Electronics put the challenge to the world to find the fastest fingers who will attend the LG Mobile World Cup in New York in December.
The South African leg of the LG Mobile World Cup started in September and has narrowed the finalists down to the 200 of the fastest in the land. A first for South Africa, the LG Mobile World Cup competition is aimed at finding South Africa’s quickest text messenger.
The finalists have been broken down into two categories for those using numeric keypads and those with QWERTY keyboards – a 150 for the former and 50 for the latter. The 200 finalists will be hosted at the South African National Championship, to be held at The Piazza, Montecasino, Fourways Johannesburg on the 24 October 2009.
The LG Mobile World Cup competition is an annual international contest, with finalists from the competing countries challenging each other to prove their mobile texting skills based on speed and accuracy.
The grand prize is to ultimately be called the International Champion of the LG Mobile World Cup and take home up to R80 000. The South African regional events have taken place across Gauteng and the Western Cape over the past five weeks, with other regions participating via the www.lgmobileworldcup.com website.
The finalists will battle it out with accuracy and speed and only one representative from each category will go through to represent South Africa at the LG Mobile World cup World Championships in New York, USA in December where they will compete against finalists from 11 countries, which include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Korea, Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Spain and the United States of America.
“Text messaging is almost as ubiquitous as voice calls, especially amongst the younger set of the population for quick communication,” says Dr Michelle Potgieter, Marketing Director, LG Electronics South Africa. “The LG Mobile World Cup is fun and exciting campaign that aimed to create a complete mobile technology experience with some great rewards.”
“The LG KS360 Chatterbox phone drew out attention as to how much more popular texting had become with the population and entrenched the LG brand within this user group as the mobile phone of choice for quick text communication,” says Dr. Potgieter.
