No iPhone for SA
According to an article in Sake24, Core Executive Head RJ van Spaandonk, the sole distributor of Apple products in South Africa, said that Apple Head Office decided that the popular iPhone will not be launched locally.
“This is a decision from the USA and outside of our control,” van Spaandonk is quoted as saying.
The iPhone made headlines earlier this year when it was launched in the US, selling more than a million units in the first three months.
The device’s innovative touch screen technology and media capabilities made it an instant hit among many gadget enthusiasts, but the fact that it is network locked did not go down well with some segments of the market.
It did not take long for hackers to ‘break’ the iPhone, allowing it to be used on other networks, but Van Spaandonk warns that Core Group will not be able to support any imported iPhones locally.
