iPhone out 20 July

Vodacom has confirmed that the popular Apple iPhone will be released in South Africa on 20 July. Stuff editor Toby Shapshak confirmed the announcement on his blog.

Vodafone previously announced a 10-country deal which would see Vodacom parent Vodafone distributing the iPhone in ten new countries including South Africa.

Today is also the day Steve Jobs is expected to announce the latest version of the iPhone. The new iPhone 2.0 is the source of much speculation. What generally appears to be agreed is that it will be based on an Infineon chipset which will offer HSDPA and WCDMA network support as well as EDGE for those outside of 3G coverage.

When iPhone 2.0 is released it is likely to be a little thinner than the current iPhone – this is a general trend with Apple – and despite rumours of a black plastic casing, it is likely that Apple will stick to aluminium and glass for its strength.
