Nokia is still the clear winner when it comes to smartphone sales but the iPhone is climbing fast. According to the most recent smartphone sales figures from analyst Gartner, Nokia grabbed a 43.7% market share of smartphones in 2008. This is almost 6% down on the previous year, despite an actual increase in Nokia sales. And the companies doing all the damage? Apple and Research in Motion (RIM), the maker of the Blackberry.
Apple’s iPhone has boost sales of smartphones for the company by more than 245% between 2007 and 2008. Over the course of 2008 Gartner says that Apple sold more than 11 million devices. In 2007 the company sold 3.3 million.
And Research in Motion’s Blackberry range have proved to be almost as successful as the iPhone. RIM sold 23 million devices in 2008, 96% up from 11,7 million in 2007.
As far as market share goes, Apple can claim an 8.2% share of the market for smartphones, while RIM’s Blackberry owns 16.6% of the market.
