Android developer works around Google cease-and-desist
Three days ago, open source developer Steve Kondik was issued with a cease-and-desist order from Google. Kondik had been distributing his version of the Android mobile OS – Cyanogen(mod) – bundled with certain proprietary Google applications, such as Maps, Market, YouTube and GTalk. These applications are only intended for use in licensed Google Experience versions of the Android OS.
Kondik has responded on his blog by indicating that he will comply with the order and remove all proprietary Google applications from future version of his OS. “Google’s proprietary applications … are not part of the open source project and are only part of “Google Experience” devices. They are Google’s intellectual property and I intend to respect that,” Kondik stated.
Kondik intends to release a backup utility that will extract various Google applications from an original Google Experience device. With this legal backup in hand, a user can then install the Cyanogen(mod) and then “Google-ify” their install with their applications backup.
Kondik also plans on including an online application store through which non-Google Experience users can download whichever applications they may need.
