Sony boosts Playstation3

Following the announcement earlier this week that Microsoft plans to ship a 60GB version of its XBox 360 console and cut its prices, Sony yesterday announced it will offer an 80GB Playstation3 from September.

When Microsoft announced its plans there was speculation that Playstation would drop its prices in response. Company chief financial officer, Nobuyuki Oneda, said last week that the company had no plans to cut plans.

Instead, Sony’s move doubles the storage capacity of the 40GB Playstation3 Core unit while keeping the price static.

The move may also end backward compatibility with the Playstation2 for games as Sony focuses on the larger capacity Playstation3. While many users still use the Playstation2, the nine-year old console is nearing its natural life and users may soon have to look at upgrading their hardware.
