Xbox360 prices to skyrocket
Last week MyBroadband had the pleasure of publishing an article telling how the Xbox360 costs about 13% less in SA than it does in the USA.
Now, just a week after publishing the article, news has surfaced that hefty Xbox360 price hikes are imminent.
Xboxgaming.co.za reported on Friday that we can expect an increase of between 30-40% on the console as well as the games.
– Xbox 360 Arcade will jump from R1800 to R2500
– Xbox 360 Pro 60GB will jump from R2700 to R3800
– Xbox 360 Elite will jump from R3500 to R5000
Furthermore, AAA games can be expected to rise to around R1000 per copy.
This is a real pity, as we were just recently praising Microsoft for sticking to such low console prices despite the weakened rand and global economic downturn.
Microsoft was not able to comment at the time of publication, but it would seem that the devalued Rand is finally catching up with local console pricing.
The new prices will make the Xbox 360 console range significantly more expensive than its equivalent USA pricing.
The Xbox 360 Elite will now be more expensive than the PS3 40GB, and just R200 cheaper than the PS3 80Gb which includes 2 games.
A Sony representative commented that there is no foreseeable change in the PS3’s local pricing, and that prices are likely to remain constant for at least the next 6 months.
For anyone looking to purchase an Xbox360, it is strongly advised that they do so soon.
