Gaming console price war hots up
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Microsoft will cut the price of the Xbox 360 by US 50 early next month, something which the company did not want to confirm or deny.
Microsoft has long contended that its superior range of Xbox games is the biggest draw card for the gaming community, but with Sony ringing up the Playstation 3 numbers after their price cut, Microsoft may want to hit back with a cut of its own.
Sony said that their PS3 sales jumped an impressive 135 percent at their most popular retailers after slashing their price earlier this month.
The latest NPD Group figures show that Nintendo’s Wii is still reigning supreme with 381 800 units sold in June. The Wii is currently priced more aggressively than the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360 which seems to stand Nintendo in good stead.
According to the NPD stats, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sold 198 400 units while Sony’s PlayStation 3 was bottom of the list with only 98 500 units.
Sony is however confident that its expanded range of games and lower PS3 prices will mean that the strong sales seen in July will continue.
It is interesting to note that the Playstation 2 continues to sell well with 270 700 units moved in June, more than both the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. This is most likely due to a combination of lower prices and a wide range of available games.
