.Me domain opens for registration
The first .Me domain names opened for registration today. The top-level .Me domain has huge potential for both businesses and individuals looking to register domain names such as call.me, hug.me or talkto.me or those looking to personalise their website.
The .Me domain became available when, in 2006, the small nation of Montenegro was assigned .Me as the country's official domain name extension. Montenegro decided to capitalise on its virtual real estate by removing geographic restrictions on the domain name ownership. Rather than follow the convention of allowing only Montenegro-based individuals and businesses to register .Me, Montenegro has made the .Me domain available to everyone.
.Me domain names are likely to become very popular with the blogging community or users wanting to set up personal resume pages.
Initial registrations for the .Me domain open on 6 May but will be restricted to trademark holders. During this "Sunrise Period", organisations with registered trademarks will be allowed to apply for their own .Me domain name. One month later, on 6 June, registration for .Me domain names will open to the public.
