Top online products

International online retailer Amazon.com and local online shop Wantitall released their most popular products recently with some surprises in store.

According to Amazon.com the Nintendo Wii was the top selling gaming product in 2008 while the Amazon Kindle reigned supreme in the electronics department.

The top selling products were however still books, DVD’s and music, and here there was a distinct similarity between the preferences of local and international online shoppers.

“It is interesting to note the variety of goods which were ordered during 2008 with best sellers ranging from books to DVD’s, electronics, watches and computers,” said Wantitall founder Justin Drennan.

Wall-E was the best selling DVD movie at both Amazon.com and Wantitall.co.za while Jeff Dunham’s ‘Spark of Insanity’ – a comedian most famous for his Achmed the Dead Terrorist routine – was a very popular choice in both shops.  The best selling music CD was also the same for Amazon and Wantitall – Viva La Vida by Coldplay.

“Nintendo Wii and the Wii Fit were huge hits for Christmas with the Rubix Cube making a comeback under the toys category. Following the e-mail circulation of the popular “Achmed” video by stand-up ventriloquist, Jeff Dunham, it is no surprise that his DVD, ‘Spark of Insanity’ was a huge hit alongside Disney’s – Wall-E,” said Drennan.

Other popular products amoung local online shoppers included toys like Ben 10 Omnitrix Watches and kids microscopes and games like Command and Conquer.

A surprise entry in the top 10 best selling products was the Rubik’s Cube – a popular puzzle toy which has sold in excess of 300 million units since it was launched in the early eighties.

Some of the more items Wantitall.co.za imported during 2008 included Hannah Montana wigs, Darth Vadar talking masks and the Neti Pot – a health care system made famous by Oprah and the Glucoboy which checks blood glucose levels.

“Bachelor parties of course see some strange requests as well, we were once asked to source the luminous yellow Borat costume!, the book – ‘How to buy a Russian Bride’ was also a once off request that made us smile,” muses Justin.
The economic downturn also does not seem to have hurt online retailers to the same extent as traditional retail stores.  Drennan said that Wantitall experienced their biggest year yet in 2008.

“We believe that the public in general have started to realize just how convenient and affordable online shopping is and that there are a huge number of products available online,” said Drennan.
