Time to switch

Internet browser, Firefox has been around for a while and for those who have been resisting the lure of this alternative to Internet Explorer, the time to relent has come. Firefox is an open-source web browser that works on every modern operating system, with Firefox 3 on the verge of being released.

Having played around with the new version for a few weeks, it’s clear that the team of developers behind Firefox has done a great job. The new version, even in its non-final state, is more stable than the previous version and pages appear faster than before.

I’m most impressed with a few small features that stand out over the previous Firefox. First, I have folders with many links inside them on my bookmarks bar. Previously, if I wanted to move them around I had to go into a special menu. Now it’s as simple as clicking and dragging the bookmark to the desired position. You still can’t delete those bookmarks from inside the folder but you can just drag it to the bookmark bar itself and delete it from there.

However, the one feature that will be of benefit to everyone is now in the address bar. Most browsers try to guess where you want to go based on the URL you’re typing in. So when you type www.fi it guesses that you want to go to the Finweek site and suggests that link.

Firefox 3 takes it a step further and if you have been to a site before you only need start typing the name of the site – no www or dots – and it begins offering suggestions in lightning quick time. I only typed “Finw” and the Finweek site was at the top of the list. It doesn’t just look at the site address but looks at the name that pops up on top of your browser and searches that as well. For me, typing in “Music” puts Kalahari.net at the top of the list.

Firefox 3 is a free download and you can get it from www.firefox.com and click on the developer link.
