Firefox record official

More than 8 million copies of Firefox 3 were downloaded in just 24 hours on June 17, the Guinness World Record organisation has confirmed.

The record attempt was run by the SpreadFirefox campaign to mark the launch of Firefox 3. The Guinness World Records organisation yesterday confirmed that a total of 8 002 530 copies of Firefox were downloaded in the specified time.

The record attempt initially swamped the download servers with many users unable to access the site for the first few hours. These problems were later resolved and downloads climbed to an average of around 6 000 downloads a minute for the 24-hour period.

More than 19 000 copies of Firefox 3 were downloaded in South Africa during the record attempt.
