Big boost for Windows Mobile
Microsoft’s latest Windows Mobile release, version 6.1, sports an easier to use interface and a good handful of productivity enhancements.
Demonstrating the latest version of Windows Mobile at the TechEd South Africa 2008 conference in Durban this week, Microsoft mobile expert, Roderick van der Graaf, said that the company decided to release a 6.1 version to include a number of features requested by users of Windows Mobile 6.0.
Van der Graaf said that version 6.1 was designed to make it easier to retrieve information on the phone. "We really worked to get rid of multiple clicks to access features," he said. Accessing regularly used features of the phone can be accessed through the Start button which keeps a record and the slider makes it easy to access other features.
Bluetooth connections have also been improved in the latest release, said Van der Graaf.
Email management has been given a boost in Windows Mobile 6.1, and users can both limit the number of emails stored on the phone while still being able to search for older emails on their remote Exchange server. Contacts, similarly, can be stored locally while still having the ability to search for extra contacts on remote company directories.
In an effort to improve battery life on Windows Mobile Devices, version 6.1 reduces the amount of data needed to be sent between the phone and home server, by as much as 30%. The other benefit of that is reduced data charges.
Van der Graaf also said that an improved web browser, with better support for Flash video among others, is due out for Windows Mobile 6.1
