OpenOffice fans down site

The OpenOffice.org website is today still mostly unavailable to users as a steady stream of fans looking to download the latest release swamp the site.

OpenOffice.org officially announced the release of version 3.0 of its open source office suite around midday South African time yesterday. Within minutes of the announcement the site started experiencing heavy loads and returned multiple connection timeout errors. Repeated attempts to access the site were rewarded with partial content as the servers took significant strain.

For a period yesterday afternoon the site returned a simple message which said that the site was experiencing excessive load and that its technicians were "trying to come up with a resolution".

This morning the OpenOffice.org website is still only partially available and in place of its normal design simply lists some of the mirror sites where users can download the software.

South African users can download copies of OpenOffice.org 3.0 from the http://openoffice.mirror.ac.za mirror site which has the latest 3.0 versions available.

OpenOffice.org yesterday officially announced the release of version 3.0 although copies have been available on most mirror servers since the start of the weekend.

OpenOffice.org 3.0 includes a Mac-compatible version, support for working with Microsoft Office 2007 files as well as a number of interface improvements.
