Free local hosting for everyone
Internet Service Provider (ISP) Cybersmart has launched their free hosting service yesterday, offering consumers a free entry hosting package. This offer is open to all South Africans, but Cybersmart subscribers will get the benefit of an enhanced service.
Cybersmart’s free entry level hosting package offers subscribers 30 MB of disk space, 150 MB of traffic, 10 email addresses and CPanel access. Cybersmart ADSL subscribers will get 50 MB of disk space, 300 MB of traffic, 20 Mailboxes and CPanel access.
While this offer is open to everyone, all domains must be registered with Cybersmart and websites must use the Cybersmart mail servers. “The domain registrations are R74.10 inclusive for .co.za per year (which we believe to be either the cheapest or amoung the cheapest) and R125.40 for .com/net and most of the others (the exceptions are listed on our website),” said Cybersmart MD Laurie Fialkov.
Fialkov explains that they are offering free local hosting to reduce the cost of local bandwidth. “We were very excited when CINX (Cape Town Internet Exchange) was opened in Cape Town as we thought we would get an opportunity to enter into settlement free peering arrangements with the content providers, and finally be on equal footing to the Johannesburg ISPs who have had JINX for many years,” said Fialkov.
“This is not the case. The content providers want to charge us for peering, some of them at a higher rate than it costs to get bandwidth internationally – so we figured if we have to pay for our users to collect content from other providers it would be cheaper to create our own content which is exactly what we are doing,” Fialkov concluded.
