Free local hosting from Cybersmart

50MB...

EDIT: And, your domain has to be with them, as well as your email.

It's something though.

Perhaps something viable for mobile sites?

No idea what I'm speaking of here :o

This is certainly enough data and traffic for smaller sites. The domain registration is also reasonable. Currently no PHP and DB support, but watch this space ;)

Unlimited ice cream!!!!! (but the bowl is 10ml big and you have to eat it with a big spoon... oh and it's the ****ty kind of ice cream you don't like anyway)

:p

I, for one, am happy someone is doing something, even though you have to pay for the domain name registration :)

Thumbs up Cybersmart.

There's no such thing as a free lunch.
That doesn't mean this new hosting package doesn't give us more value for our money though, at the slight expense of cybersmart profits ;D

Its great but 99% of the websites out there (company wise for example) has php/cms requirement so the boss can update his company info whenever they want (even though it doesn't happen too often)

Learning basic HTML and how to FTP is usually a hassle.

If they included PHP and database support, which made part of the 50mb, awesome. The pricing of which could be like R200 a month for server upkeep. Issue is that they're giving unlimited local bandwidth for your locally hosted site, but taking away all the tools normal people with no clue about the internet use to keep their stuff in order. So then you have to pay a guy to do it for you anyway... might as well host the entire thing overseas then

I'm actually tempted to host a website there, that has a very popular 20 or 50mb file that people want to download. Which I'll then SEO the crap out of.

See the site pull about 15gig a day in downloads and see how fast they change their tune...

Cybersmart’s free entry level hosting package offers subscribers 30 MB of disk space, 150 MB of traffic, 10 email addresses and CPanel access. Cybersmart ADSL subscribers will get 50 MB of disk space, 300 MB of traffic, 20 Mailboxes and CPanel access.
They've already considered and blocked the possibility of that happening :P

Why are you tempted to do that? So you can see them change their tune from "free hosting" to "nothing"? Not a very useful thing to be doing.

Every week we have something new :) The smaller guys are really making the difference for us common folk, while Telkom, IS, MTN, Vodacom, ... all keep scr3w1ng us :s

Step in the right direction Cybersmart :)

So if you use your allocated 50mb space then the website can be viewed exactly 6 times.:D

Not a realistic scenario I know, but still kinda hilarious.

EDIT: Post sounds a bit nasty. If I were to set up a private website it would probably be well within the given limitations. Commendable effort on Cybersmart part.

Well, it is by far not the best hosting offer out there. BUT, for people that have a very simple "this is me and here is my contact details" static webpage it could be useful :)

Thumbs up Cybersmart!

I agree they need to include PHP and DB access. Who sets up a web page these days without these, and does it really increase the cost at all?

It's a great step in the right direction none-the-less.

Well done Cybersmart. Great to see you're also helping change the way broadband works in this country.

And hosting content is definitely what we need to do.

For all the detractors - these be baby steps, but they still be steps. Big steps will follow.

Well for one thing you can cram more static websites on a server as database driven one's which of course cost take a bit more from the processor and memory

I'm a web designer and 150mb traffic is laughable, especially if it includes the email traffic also. And no PHP or MySQL support? No wonder it's free, you should never expect to pay for such a ridiculous package.

The Cybersmart .COM registration fee is a bit high though, I pay R62.00 at Name.com for a .com domain with free WHOIS protection and no hidden fees.
