No Telkom exclusivity with EASSy

EASSy recently announced that they will start construction on their cable system by the middle of December. Competition in the international fiber bandwidth market is something industry players and consumers have been waiting for for a long time, but recent rumours placed a dampener on EASSy.

Speculation started to emerge that Telkom may have exclusive access to the EASSy cable landing station which they will provide and manage in South Africa.

EASSy was however quick to debunk these rumors, saying that while Telkom will provide the landing station it will not have exclusive access to the system

"Telkom, Neotel, MTN and Vodacom are investors in the EASSY cable and Telkom is therefore not the only South African company that participates in the project. Albeit that Telkom provides the cable landing station for the EASSy landing, it has no relevance regarding who may / may not use the station but is simply a matter of being the supplier of the cable station facility to the EASSy Parties," said John Sihra, EASSy Project Coordinator.

Sihra said that while the actual terms and conditions of the EASSy project cannot be communicated publicly, it is important to recognize that the EC Act of South Africa clearly depicts that no terms or conditions are allowed that contain an exclusivity provision or create undue barriers to access and use of such facilities.

“It should therefore be clear to you that neither Telkom nor any other SA Operator for that matter will have an exclusive right to provide bandwidth in and out of South Africa,” Sihra concluded.
