No Telkom exclusivity with EASSy

Hmm.....I would really love to know how this is going to work.

I suppose the cable landing station that they talk about will be the one near me here in Mtunzini - A Telkom owned and high security building - If the likes of MTN and Vodacom cant get into the telephone exchanges, how are EASSy techs gonna gain access to this international gateway building.......new rules?

Let's hope that they aren't and they just start a new telkom less network in this country! :D

Doesn't mean that Telkom won't still TRY to control the landing rights. Took Neotel a long time to get Telkom to give it access to its facilities, ECA or not...

Die Telkom, DIE.

But remember we are talking about Telkom here - they will do whatever they can to screw the other investors.

Did CellC not recently state that Telkom is holding them ransom when they tried to connect their own lines to the cellular tower exchanges - forcing them to buy the link from them.

Maybe they will try the same with the landing station - the other operators must rent a local Telkom line to connect them with the landing station - not allowing them to run their own cable into the landing station.

Or simply charge the consortium extremely high rental on for the landing station, which will be split up between local investors, thereby placing a premium on international bandwidth, yet again. Let's hope not.

Great, add another 50ms to the latency if the pathetic telkom is handling the landing.

Telkom will make the entrance the same as at a toll gate and give everyone permission, but charge them for it . . .

Sihra said that while the actual terms and conditions of the EASSy project cannot be communicated publicly
If there's nothing to hide, why keep it confidential?

I hope Telkom isn't planning on doing their 'best' to co-oprate with multi-access facilitation at the landing station to the favour of SAT3. Even sharing SAT3 with Neotel would still be better for them than a 4-way split on EASSy and it also gives Telkom the 'opportunity' to slow down their competition if not watched very carefully.

IMO the EASSy landing station should be on neutral ground and the partners have equal access under the terms of the EASSy agreement.

Telkom should go take their sh1tty business practicses and landing stations elsewhere... like... afganistan for example, they'll appreciate telkom more than SA will ever.

Yes, Telkom will setup a monthly "access cap".
You may enter the facility only 3 times in one month, after which, you will have to purchase additional access passes.

(Although new regulations state that you will get unlimited access to the facility, but only if you speak a local language while on site. And you still pay)

The kind of statement of the actual terms of the EASSY C&MA being confidential makes it clear that there is something that is being kept hidden. What if there is no exclusivity on access to the landing station, but there is an exclusivity on something else?
