Telkom mum on network problems

Telkom users accessing the Verizon Business Network using the Johannesburg-Cape Town link continue to suffer from high latency and packet loss.

This problem started early last week, and Verizon Business indicated that a lack of infrastructure on Telkom’s side of the peering infrastructure is causing problems.

“The matter has been escalated by Verizon to the relative executives in Telkom and upgrades are being scheduled within the next two days. Verizon continues to escalate the urgency of the matter and is making all efforts to get Telkom to address the matter with the urgency it deserves,” said Verizon Business senior executive of operations, Edwin Thompson last week.

Thompson further pointed out that Telkom has indicated that as other peering parties are affected by the changes, it has elected to delay the changes in order to give other peering parties notice of the changes.

According to a Hetzner network notice the Johannesburg peering link was successfully upgraded Friday evening at 20:00, but that they are still awaiting confirmation on when the CPT peering upgrade between SAIX/Verizon will happen.

Telkom was asked for feedback regarding this issue, but despite contacting the company numerous times it remains mum on the cause of the problem, what is being done to address it and when it may be resolved.
