First DSTV HD channel
In a press statement by Oracle Airtime Sales (OATS) the company has announced that DStv will launch its high-definition (HD) channel offering in August this year, starting with a dedicated HD Olympics channel.
According to OATS it will be a single Olympics HD channel which will become a general entertainment channel, yet to be named, featuring content from a variety of M-Net channels after the event.
“It is likely that this HD offering will be expanded to include other channels in time,” the company said.
To view these channels subscribers will need to have an HD-ready (or full HD) television set and an HD PVR decoder. Current projections are that these new decoders will be available in towards the middle of July.
OATS will provide free advertising space on the HD channel for the first few months.
“It is Oracle’s intention to insert commercials onto the above channels from inception. However, we are aware that it will take some time to build an HD base and therefore, until end March 2009, we are prepared to flight these commercials at no cost for advertisers who provide us with material in HD format (1080i HD Cam 25 frame stereo sound),” the company said.
“Our understanding is that a large amount of international commercials are already being shot in HD – which may assist if these ads are also intended to flight in SA. Also, we understand that the cost to convert material from 35mm to HD is not outrageous and it may therefore be worthwhile for advertisers to consider this option.”
