Telkom confirms strike rumours
Rumours have started to emerge that Telkom employees are planning to strike on Friday, with a general stay-away organized for Monday.
According to information received the strike action centers around demands for higher pay increases and the intended staff outsourcing scheme.
Recent media reports suggest that Telkom looks set to outsource large chunks of its core business. According to a Mail & Guardian article, “the fixed-line telco is planning to outsource a substantial amount of its core business, including its network, the backbone of telecommunications in the country, as part of a restructuring process that it hopes to complete by August.”
Telkom confirmed that they are aware of the rumours of impending industrial action, but that they have not been served with an official Section 64 notice.
“A Section 64 notice, if served by organised labour, will advise the Company of the nature and timing of planned industrial action and is required 48 hours prior to the said action,” said Telkom’s Meshack Dlamini, Executive for Employee Relations, Telkom SA Ltd.
