Neotel explains network issues

Many of Neotel’s residential and small business clients recently experienced slow throughput, network deterioration and problems with general Internet access.

Neotel confirmed these issues, stating that a significant increase in its customer base and network usage led to performance fluctuations in specific areas. "This has primarily affected data users with certain customers experiencing decreased data performance," the company said in an official statement.

At the time Neotel said that it was fast-tracking the implementation of new sites in areas where they have identified high usage. "We will provide progress updates as they become available," Neotel promised.

Neotel has updated the feedback, saying that significant analysis was carried out which resulted in them identifying hot spots  in certain areas that were experiencing congestion which reduced the throughput to customers.

"Subsequently, network optimisation was carried out (in a phased approach) on the various elements of the network that impact throughput – this was done over a course of two months and is ongoing as the customer base grows."

Good news for consumers is that Neotel last week announced that it planned to double its network coverage during 2009. The company is also planning to increase coverage to smaller cities including such as Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth.
