Three new HD DSTV channels planned
MultiChoice launched its highly anticipated high definition PVR (HD PVR) in August 2008 – in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The decoder was introduced at a price of R2499 and promised increased functionality over its predecessor.
MultiChoice launched a single HD channel – M-Net HD – and said at the time that it was planning a few additional channels in future. The new HD PVR was unfortunately dogged by software problems, with many users opting to rather use their old SD PVR.
MultiChoice fixed most of the bugs associated with its HD PVR, but so far HD PVR users still only have a single HD channel to justify their purchase. This is however set to change in the next year.
MultiChoice confirmed that they will launch three additional HD channels before March 2010. Marilyn Watson, MultiChoice’s External Communications Manager said that the three HD channels will include sport, documentary and film. Watson highlighted that at this stage customers will not be charged for the additional channels.
MyBroadband recently reported that MultiChoice is planning a new HD PVR, and the company has confirmed that the aim of the new HD PVR is to reduce the cost of the device. Watson said that the exact date and the actual retail price is still to be confirmed, but it is speculated that the device will cost in the region of R 2 000.
