Three new HD DSTV channels planned

This is good news - may make it worthwhile to get the new HD PVR. One would assume that the World Cup will be shown in HD...

I thought that SABC had the broadcast rights hence the whole tender debacle regarding the procurement of Sony HD OB units? If thats the case then we will be lucky if SABC has the money to broadcast or the staff, what with the strike.

Mind you we will be lucky if there is a stadium to broadcast out of thanks to NUM and its affiliates.

(there seems to be a coincidence here: there are no public holidays in July, the workforce is striking in July. Is there any relation? I want to strike and sit on the beach!!) (tongue firmly in cheek!)

and all the while the early adopters get shafted by an HDPVR that barely works, a channel with reduced bitrate and paying out their you know what for the first expensive HDPVR...

Watson highlighted that at this stage customers will not be charged for the additional channels.

A previous artical on fmtech: http://www.fmtech.co.za/?p=11480 said that you would have to pay extra for the 3 new channels.

However, there is a catch. The three new channels will only be available as part of a special HD bouquet, which subscribers will have to pay for. However, the existing M-Net HD channel will still be available to regular subscribers.

So which article is correct?

I received this info today. I think MC commented on the previous article:

"However, we would like to clarify that customers at this stage, will not be charged."

And the added clarification from MultiChoice:

MultiChoice would like to clarify that the new HD bouquet offering will at this stage, be at no charge to customers.

At the time of the interview with Duncan MCleod of Financial Mail, the final decision had not been made.

MultiChoice would like to apologise for any confusion this may have caused

The Confed Cup was broadcast in HD, so I am sure they will do the World Cup as well.

Sport in HD really is something. All the big rugby matches of late were broadcast in HD. They also showed the Wimbledon Finals in HD.

I wonder if it would be possible to substitute some channels instead :P
Good news non-the-less.

The decoder should be free...they will get their money back with the monthly subscription.

Yeah, pretty good news. I really want to get HD but have been put off by the crazy decoder price tag.

I can't see how they can justify the extra pricing. It's already R560 for DSTV Premium on the SD PVR.

Then again, MWEB used similar wording and canceled uncapped local the very next month

I have updated the story on FM Tech to reflect the fact that I was provided with inaccurate information by MultiChoice. See here:

http://www.fmtech.co.za/?p=11480

I have also accepted MultiChoice's apology. It's unfortunate that it happened and I consider the matter settled.

This is good news for HD junkies :D

It is indeed. I don't think introducing a separate HD bouquet in the current economic environment would have been such a good idea. And let's not forget, competition to MultiChoice is still coming. ODM launching later this year.

Leaves me cold.

Rubbish on TV is still rubbish regardless of whether it is in HD, SD or VD. Multichoice will be lucky if I remain a subscriber for the rest of this year.
