Anti-competitive?
Telkom customers who phone Telkom destinations face a minimum charge of R 0.594 per call, with a per-second charge of R 0.00556 during standard time. This equates to R 0.38 per minute. During Callmore time this rate decreases to R 0.17 per minute.
These charges are significantly lower than the R 0.65 which Telkom charges their customers for calls to other networks – something that is seen as anti-competitive by many local telecoms players.
Many people feel that the fact that Telkom’s interconnect charges to their competitors is higher than their own ‘full circuit’ on-net call charges are unacceptable and will make it very tough for any competitor to enter the market.
