MWEB Uncapped ADSL Acceptable Use Policy
Uncapped ADSL services have become commonplace in South Africa since MWEB launched their affordable uncapped accounts in March this year.
While price dominated initial uncapped ADSL discussions, another aspect of these services started to make headlines shortly after the euphoria of unlimited bandwidth subsided: Fair Use Policies.
Numerous Internet Service Providers (ISPs), including Afrihost and MTN, came under fire for their policies of throttling users after they have reached certain monthly usage limits. Other service providers have been blamed for their overzealous traffic shaping of uncapped accounts.
MWEB CEO Rudi Jansen has now come out and clarified their Acceptable Use Policy, making it clear that MWEB’s ‘uncapped means uncapped’ – as long as you play by the rules.
“The issue of our shaping policies has been raised a few times, and the question asked as to whether or not we throttle line speeds to curb downloads. I’d just like to clear this up for everyone. MWEB doesn’t throttle line speeds,” said Jansen.
“Our Uncapped ADSL plans are exactly that, Uncapped. And they’ll remain so! We are, however, constantly monitoring the performance of our network to give you guys a top quality service. From time to time we uncover a small number of users that aren’t using the service within our Acceptable Use Policy.”
“This isn’t fair to the majority of our customers as the usage patterns of this group can have a detrimental impact on network performance for everyone. We take the impact that this minority has on the whole user-base very seriously. If a customer is not playing fairly they will be asked to move to a product better suited to their usage needs so that they don’t impact on the enjoyment of everyone else. Here’s to a free, fair and enjoyable web for all,” Jansen concluded.
Jansen previously explained that their residential uncapped ADSL service is aimed at residential users, but that some subscribers use these accounts for business purposes like running an Internet café or serving a large office.
MWEB has an uncapped business solution which addresses the needs of business users which the ISP says is far better suited, and appropriately priced, to be used in business environments.
