MWEB 10 Mbps uncapped ADSL: Consumer pricing unveiled
MWEB has quietly launched its long awaited 10 Mbps uncapped ADSL service aimed at the consumer market. The new, high speed service compliments the company’s existing 384 Kbps, 512 Kbps and 4 Mbps uncapped offerings.
The new 10 Mbps uncapped ADSL service offers consumers two pricing options:
- R1,999 per month for a data only account
- R2,359 per month for a data account and 10 Mbps ADSL line rental
MWEB’s 10 Mbps uncapped service is a shaped connection which means that services like web surfing and email will enjoy preference over torrents and other P2P traffic at times when the network is running close to capacity.
MWEB Business uncapped
The launch of an uncapped 10 Mbps consumer offerings comes only two weeks after MWEB Business launched their uncapped, unshaped 10Mbps ADSL service aimed at the business market.
MWEB Business’ pricing for its uncapped, unshaped ADSL products are as follows:
- R4,999 per month for a 10 Mbps uncapped, unshaped data only account
- R5,359 per month for an uncapped, unshaped data account and 10 Mbps ADSL line rental
The MWEB Business uncapped accounts further come with 5 Fixed IP addresses, a lower contention ratio than the consumer offering, 300 free Wi-Fi minutes and the use of a configured business class Cisco router worth R3,999.
Limited number of 10 Mbps uncapped ADSL accounts
Axxess and Openweb were the first ISPs to launch uncapped ADSL accounts which were capable of supporting speeds of up to 10 Mbps, but these Uncapped Express+ accounts are rate limited to between 384 Kbps and 1024 Kbps during business hours.
The closest rival to MWEB’s uncapped 10 Mbps consumer offering may be Axxess’ 1 Mbps Uncapped Express+ service (which offers speeds of up to 10 Mbps after hours) priced at R2399 per month.
The reluctance of service providers to launch their own uncapped 10 Mbps ADSL offerings may be an indication that they are not certain about the business case behind these accounts.
Many ISPs have indicated that it is not financially feasible for them to launch uncapped 4 Mbps services, and 10 Mbps accounts carry an even higher risk which may be to blame for the cautious approach by MWEB competitors.
