R149 uncapped mobile data SIM launched

A company called DATA SIM has launched a new SIM card, offering unlimited mobile data for R149 per month (also see: Beware R149 uncapped data SIM: MTN).

The company said that the MTN-powered SIM card provides unlimited Internet browsing, social media usage, videos on Facebook, Skype video calling, file downloads, and WhatsApp.

However, there are many blocked services. These include YouTube, porn sites, movie and music downloads, and malicious sites.

“The DATA SIM card is capable of offering you LTE 4G blazing-fast speed. We will not throttle the speeds at all,” the DATA SIM website states.

The service is offered on a month-to-month basis, without any contracts. “Our service allows any user to subscribe and cancel at any time,” the company said.

The R149 SIM allows tethering, and can be ordered as a mini, micro, or nano SIM.

What makes the R149 unlimited SIM possible

DATA SIM founder Saeed Moosa told MyBroadband that they are using an APN from MTN through which they offer the service.

However, through a special agreement, they are only paying MTN for the SIM card and not for data. This, said Moosa, allows them to offer the aggressive price.

Moosa said they are looking to offer the service long-term, and that new services are on the way.

He said they are planning to launch a similar service through Telkom Mobile, which will include unlimited mobile data, R50 airtime, and 10GB Wi-Fi access for R149 per month.
