MTN said that it has no working relationship with DATA SIM – the company behind the R149 per month data SIM which offers unlimited data.
MyBroadband reported on 13 January 2015 that DATA SIM was offering MTN-powered SIM cards which provide unlimited Internet browsing, social media usage, Skype video calling, and file downloads.
The company promises un-throttled speeds on MTN’s 3G and LTE network, using an MTN APN. However, MTN said that this is not the case.
“MTN can categorically state that it has no working relationship with this entity, and neither has it endorsed a product offered by this company,” said Alpheus Mangale, MTN SA’s chief enterprise officer.
“MTN offers wholesale mobile data to ECS/ECNS licenced operators only via a model that is usage-based for contract terms ranging from 12-60 months,” he added.
Mangale said that consumers should exercise caution before signing up for the R149 unlimited data service.
DATA SIM founder explains
DATA SIM founder Saeed Moosa said that he has partnered with a company – which has an APN with MTN – to offer the unlimited data service.
“MTN can check and see that the APN is active. While DATA SIM doesn’t have an APN directly from MTN, we are using our partner’s APN,” he said.
Moosa provided the name of the company to MyBroadband, but asked for the name not to be published.
He explained that this was in fear that the APN may be discontinued, or that others may then approach the company to compete with them.
MyBroadband contacted the company in question, and the managing partner confirmed they had a reseller relationship with DATA SIM.
He said that they develop tailor-made mobile data packages for their resellers – which includes DATA SIM – using their existing platform.
