Uncapped Internet caused data explosion in SA
An explosion in data usage has hit South Africa, with managing executive of wholesale and networks at Telkom, Bashier Sallie, reporting an increase of around 2,000 terabits per second (Tbps) to around 12,000Tbps in under two years.
Sallie was addressing a question about video traffic on South African broadband networks as a panelist at SATNAC, an annual event hosted by Telkom.
Around 60% of the traffic generated is video traffic, Sallie said.
This tremendous increase in bandwidth usage came after the proliferation of uncapped broadband in South Africa, Sallie noted.
Telkom launched its own uncapped ADSL accounts towards the end of September 2011 after Mweb set the South African ADSL market on fire by launching affordable uncapped accounts.
