The advertisement DStv rejected
Trade union Solidarity has released an online video containing the advertisement which was not allowed to be aired on DStv’s Kyknet.
According to Solidarity CEO Dirk Hermann, the union has no idea why DStv was not willing to broadcast the advertisement.
He added that this was the second time this year a Solidarity advert was rejected, which they feel amounts to “unwarranted censorship”.
The trade is now using YouTube in combination with a social media campaign to promote the video.
“If DStv refuses to air our advertisement, we will find other ways to distribute it to the public,” said Johan Kruger, deputy general secretary of Solidarity.
Hermann said that members of the public can now form their own opinion on whether the advert should have been rejected by DStv.
DStv explains
DStv Media Sales told MyBroadband their decision definitely did not constitute censorship.
“DStv Media Sales has an absolute discretion to accept or reject any advert,” the company said.
DStv Media Sales said Solidarity was well aware this absolute discretion was confirmed by the High Court earlier this year.
“In March, the court ruled against Solidarity in a matter involving the placing of an advert on Kyknet and ordered them to pay costs,” DStv Media Sales said.
