DStv balance checking payment complaint
MultiChoice has changed its DStv balance checking commercial following a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA).
The DStv television commercial promoted the company’s balance checking through cellphones service. The commercial invited subscribers to check their balance by dialling *120*68584#.
One consumer lodged a complaint with the ASA, saying the advertisement was misleading as it did not inform consumers that dialing the advertised USSD code would incur costs.
The user was also unable to access his DStv balance as he had no airtime available at the time.
MultiChoice responded, saying that it has now included a disclaimer in its advertising regarding applicability of costs.
The ASA said that MultiChoice’s amendment of the commercial addresses the complainant’s concerns.
