SABC board vacancies still not filled
The process to fill three South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board vacancies has been delayed yet again in Parliament.
Almost a year after the resignation of Prof Bongani Khumalo, Thembinkosi Bonakele and the controversial Ellen Tshabalala, the communications subcommittee on Tuesday had to adjourn a meeting to finalise the shortlist to fill their posts.
This was due to a delay in vetting the candidates by the state security and verifying their qualifications by Parliament’s human resources.
Advisors told the committee the process of verifying qualifications was “close to being complete”, but it was delayed by the ongoing strike in Parliament.
The committee also heard vetting the candidates was also “almost complete”.
Sub-committee chairperson Joyce Moloi-Moropa said they had picked up a problem with state security, which provided information in dribbles.
Asked by Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Phumzile van Damme if the committee would only be looking at filling all six board vacancies following the removal of three other members including Hope Zinde, the chairperson said they only dealt with what the president asked them to do.
“Until such time the president brings the other three vacancies [to our attention], this is all we are dealing with.”
