DStv and eTV don’t exist: SABC COO
SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng has said that MultiChoice and eTV “don’t exist” in his eyes, and that employees from the companies are coming to work for the SABC.
Motsoeneng was speaking at a press conference about “schedule changes, new shows, and new talent” at the SABC, and a new logo for SABC 3.
He said many people were coming to work for the SABC because of the good opportunities at the broadcaster, and that he did not worry about what other broadcasters were doing.
The press briefing follows statements from Motsoeneng that the SABC 3 will have 80% South African content, after a 90% local content quota was enforced at the SABC’s radio stations.
We know what South Africa wants
Motsoeneng said the SABC knows what South Africans want, and “have been doing what people want”.
“The SABC will do what we believe is right for South Africans,” he said.
Motsoeneng said the SABC will show more local content on its TV channels, while ensuring standards are not lowered.
From 1 July, viewers will see an improved news room – with consistency across all channels – said Motsoeneng.
From November, there will be a youth platform on its channels – where the SABC will visit universities to produce content.
He said there will also be a focus on ensuring content is produced in all 11 of South Africa’s official languages.
I was an actor, and white people like me
Motsoeneng also took the time to explain that he was an actor when at school, and the content changes he was enforcing was something he understood from this experience.
He added that he wanted to see “more white interns” at the SABC, and that he had a good relationship with the white people he works with.
“I work with white people, and they like me,” he said.
