Cheaper DStv HD PVR popular

MultiChoice launched the first HD PVR (which stands for high definition personal video recorder) DStv decoder in August 2008 at a retail price of around R3,000.

Towards the end of May 2010 MultiChoice announced a cheaper HD PVR model, the HD PVR 2P. While the HD PVR 2P may have a reduced feature set, it launched at a retail price of around R2,000.

“Since its launch in June 2010, the HD PVR 2P has had a very positive reception from customers.”

In recent months many retailers like Makro and Pick and Pay have decreased the price of the newly launched HD PVR, retailing it for around R1,800.

It is expected that these lower prices would have boosted sales, but MultiChoice would not disclose exact figures.

“Unfortunately, we are unable to provide this information as we can only communicate figures as published in the annual financial results of Naspers,” MultiChoice said.

“As at end March 2010 the number of subscribers with PVRs stood at 364 000.”
