DStv is ditching Flash

MultiChoice told subscribers it has stopped supporting Flash video plugins.

This means that the “download and watch later” option on its desktop app will no longer be available, and the app itself will be discontinued.

Subscribers will still be able to stream shows and movies online, and the DStv Now app for Android and iOS will still be able to download content for later viewing.

“Since all the major players are discontinuing Flash and the Desktop Player is Flash-based, support for the Desktop Player has now come to an end,” said MultiChoice.

“Web standards have come a very long way and there is no more need for a separate plugin like Silverlight or Flash to play protected content.”

Instead of Flash, the DStv website will use a JavaScript player and the native digital rights management capabilities in browsers.

“Specifically, Encrypted Media Extensions with Common Encryption to provide the different video packaging and encryption combinations for all the major browsers,” said MultiChoice.
